Aldactone (Spironolactone)

Aldactone is a diuretic (water pill) used to treat primary hyperaldosteronism (an increase in a hormone called aldosterone which can cause an increase in blood pressure). Aldactone is also used to treat edema (swelling) caused by congestive heart failure, scarring of the liver, or a kidney disorder in which too much protein is excreted into the urine. In addition, it is used to treat high blood pressure either alone or with other diuretics or blood pressure lowering medicines. Aldactone can also be used to treat other conditions, as determined by your doctor.

Aldactone can cause high blood potassium levels. This effect may be greater in those with diabetes or kidney problems, elderly or severely ill. Your doctor will monitor you for increased blood potassium levels. Aldactone can cause breast enlargement in men. This is normally reversible once you stop taking the medicine. Tell your doctor if you experience this.
