Hydrochlorothiazide (Hydrochlorothiazide)

Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water pill) used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is also used to treat edema (swelling) associated with heart, kidney, liver disease, or corticosteroid and estrogen therapy.

Hydrochlorothiazide can cause nearsightedness and angle-closure glaucoma (high pressure in the eye). Discontinue hydrochlorothiazide and tell your doctor immediately if you experience abnormal visual changes or eye pain. Your doctor will perform regular blood tests to check your fluids and electrolytes (chemicals that are important for the cells in your body to function, such as sodium and potassium). Tell your doctor if you experience confusion, decreased urination, drowsiness, dry mouth, fast heart rate, low blood pressure, muscle pain or cramps, nausea, seizures, tiredness, vomiting, or weakness. Hydrochlorothiazide can cause gout (severe and painful inflammation of the joints); and an increase in your cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
