Byetta (Exenatide)

Byetta is a medicine used with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. Byetta is administered subcutaneously (just below the skin).

Byetta can cause pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). Stop using Byetta and call your doctor immediately if you have severe pain in your stomach area all the way to your back that will not go away. This may happen with or without vomiting. These may be symptoms of pancreatitis. Your risk of getting low blood sugar is higher if you use Byetta with another medicine that can cause low blood sugar (such as glipizide, glyburide, or glimepiride). Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar include shakiness, sweating, headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, confusion, irritability, hunger, fast heartbeat, or feeling jittery. Talk to your doctor about how to recognize and treat low blood sugar. Byetta can cause new or worsen existing kidney problems, including kidney failure. Tell your doctor right away if you have nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea that will not go away or if you cannot tolerate liquids by mouth while you are taking Byetta. Byetta can cause a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat; problems breathing or swallowing; severe rash or itching; fainting or feeling dizzy; or very fast heartbeat. If you have an allergic reaction, stop using Byetta and call your doctor immediately.
