Carafate (Sucralfate)

Carafate is a medicine used for short-term (up to 8 weeks) treatment of active duodenal ulcers (ulcer in the upper intestine). Carafate tablets can be used for maintenance therapy after healing of acute ulcers. Carafate is available in tablets and suspension.

A duodenal ulcer is a recurring illness. Short-term treatment with Carafate can completely heal an ulcer, but it cannot prevent other ulcers from developing nor lessen their severity. Tell your doctor if you have kidney impairment. Small amounts of aluminum can be absorbed through your stomach and intestines while taking Carafate. If you have kidney problems, you may have difficulty removing this aluminum from your body and further cause bone or brain problems. If you have diabetes, you can experience an increase in your blood sugar levels while taking Carafate suspension. Monitor your blood sugar levels closely. Your doctor may need to adjust the dose of your diabetes medication.
