Fosamax (Alendronate Sodium)

Fosamax is a medicine used to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) in postmenopausal women and to increase bone mass in men with this condition. Fosamax is also used to treat osteoporosis caused by treatment with corticosteroid medicines (such as prednisone), and to treat Paget’s disease of bone in men and women. Fosamax is available as tablets and an oral solution.

Fosamax can cause problems in your esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth and stomach) (such as irritation, swelling, or ulcers), which can sometimes bleed. Stop taking Fosamax and call your doctor right away if you experience chest pain, new or worsening heartburn, or have trouble or pain when you swallow. Fosamax can cause or worsen low blood calcium levels. Call your doctor right away if you experience spasms, twitches, or cramps in your muscles, or numbness or tingling in your fingers, toes, or around your mouth. Your doctor may prescribe calcium and vitamin D to help prevent low blood calcium levels while you are taking Fosamax. Fosamax can cause bone, joint, or muscle pain. Tell your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Fosamax can cause severe jaw bone problems. Your doctor will examine your mouth or tell you to see your dentist before you start taking Fosamax. Practice good mouth care during treatment with Fosamax. Fosamax can cause unusual fractures in the thigh bone. Tell your doctor if you experience new or unusual pain in your hip, groin, or thigh.
