Glucophage (Metformin HCl)

Glucophage is a medicine used in addition to diet and exercise to treat type 2 diabetes. It is also available as Glucophage XR, an extended-release form (allows the medicine to be released slowly in your body over 24 hours).

Glucophage can cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis. Stop using Glucophage and call your doctor right away if you feel very weak, tired or uncomfortable; have unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, or unusual or unexpected stomach discomfort; feel cold, dizzy, or lightheaded; or if you suddenly have a slow or uneven heartbeat. Glucophage rarely causes low blood sugar alone. However, this can happen if you do not eat enough, if you drink alcohol, or if you take other medicines to lower blood sugar.
