Humalog (Insulin Lispro, rDNA origin)
Humalog is a medicine that is a fast-acting insulin. Humalog is used to control high blood sugar in people with diabetes. Humalog comes as a prefilled pen, vial, and a cartridge.
Do not change the type of insulin you use unless told to do so by your doctor. Your insulin dose and the time you take your dose can change with different types of insulin. Make sure you have the right type and strength of insulin prescribed for you.
Do not make any changes to your insulin dose unless you have talked to your doctor. Your insulin needs may change because of illness, stress, other medicines, or changes in your diet or activity level.
Humalog can cause you to experience low blood sugar. Therefore, it is important to use it as prescribed by your doctor. Symptoms of low blood sugar include: hunger, dizziness, feeling shaky or shakiness, lightheadedness, sweating, irritability, headache, fast heartbeat, or confusion. Always carry a quick source of sugar to treat low blood sugar (such as glucose tablets, hard candy, or juice).
If you forget to take your dose of Humalog, your blood sugar may get too high. If your high blood sugar is not treated, it can lead to serious problems (such as passing out or loss of consciousness, coma, or even death). Follow your doctor’s instructions for treating high blood sugar. Symptoms of high blood sugar include: increased thirst, frequent urination, drowsiness, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, fruity smelling breath, nausea, vomiting, or stomach ache.
Humalog starts working faster than other insulins. You should inject it 15 minutes or less before a meal. If you do not plan to eat within 15 minutes, delay the injection until the correct time (15 minutes before eating).
