Lanoxin (Digoxin)

Lanoxin is a medicine used to treat heart failure or atrial fibrillation (an irregular, fast heartbeat). Lanoxin is available in tablets and oral solution, or it can be administered intravenously (through a vein in your arm).

Lanoxin can cause a different type of abnormal heartbeat, heart block, or other heart problems; which can be dangerous and life-threatening. Your doctor will monitor you while you take Lanoxin. Tell your doctor if you have had any other heart problems before you start this medication. Do not stop taking Lanoxin without first speaking to your doctor. If you suddenly stop taking Lanoxin, you can experience serious changes in your heart. Even if you feel better, keep taking this medication to help your heart work properly. You can experience serious side effects if you use Lanoxin and have low blood potassium or magnesium levels, high blood calcium levels, or other electrolyte (chemicals that are important for the cells in your body to function, such as sodium and potassium) abnormalities. Your doctor will perform regular blood tests to check your fluids and electrolytes. Tell your doctor if you are malnourished or experienced diarrhea or vomiting. Your doctor may schedule certain lab tests periodically while you use Lanoxin. These tests will help to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Do not miss your scheduled follow-up appointments with your doctor.
