Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium)

Lipitor belongs to a class of medicines called “statins,” which are used to lower your cholesterol when a low-fat diet is not enough. Lipitor lowers your total cholesterol and the “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, thereby helping to lower your risk of a heart attack, stroke, or chest pain; hospitalization for heart failure; or the need for procedures to restore the blood flow back to the heart or to another part of the body.

Taking Lipitor is not a substitute for following a healthy low-fat and low-cholesterol diet and exercising to lower your cholesterol. Do not take Lipitor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Lipitor can cause muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, right upper abdominal discomfort, dark urine, or yellowing of your skin or whites of your eyes. Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these symptoms. Lipitor can cause serious allergic reactions. Call your doctor right away if you experience swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat or if you have trouble breathing or swallowing.
