Penicillin VK (Penicillin V Potassium)

Penicillin VK is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections of the throat, heart, middle ear, skin, and respiratory (lung) tract; and gum disease. It may also be used to treat or prevent other bacterial infections, as determined by your doctor. Penicillin VK is available in tablets and powder for oral solution.

Do not take penicillin VK if you are allergic to it, any of its ingredients, or similar antibiotics (such as amoxicillin, cefazolin, cefaclor, or cefotetan). Tell your doctor right away if you take penicillin VK and feel signs of an allergic reaction (such as a rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing). Penicillin VK can cause diarrhea or colitis (inflammation of the colon). This can occur a couple of months after taking the last dose of penicillin VK. Tell your doctor right away if you have diarrhea or colitis. Use penicillin VK as prescribed by your doctor for the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve earlier. Do not skip doses. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of penicillin VK can decrease its effectiveness and can lead to the growth of bacteria that are resistant to the effects of penicillin VK.
