Promethazine DM (Dextromethorphan HBr/Promethazine HCl)

Promethazine DM is a medicine used to treat cough and upper respiratory symptoms you can have with allergies or a cold. Promethazine DM contains two medicines: promethazine (an antihistamine) and dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant).

This medication can cause drowsiness or dizziness and impair mental and/or physical abilities required for hazardous tasks, such as driving a car or operating machinery. Promethazine DM can cause serious and possibly life-threatening respiratory depression (decreased rate of breathing) or increase your risk for a seizure. Tell your doctor if you have any breathing problems (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [narrowing of the lungs that makes it hard to breath] or sleep apnea [you stop breathing temporarily during sleep]) or a history of seizures. Promethazine DM can cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a life-threatening brain disorder). Tell your doctor if you experience a fever, stiff muscles, changes in your mental status, fast or irregular heartbeat, changes in your blood pressure, or excessive sweating. Tell your doctor if you experience any uncontrollable muscle movements.
