Propranolol (Propranolol HCl)

Propranolol is a medicine known as a beta-blocker, which is used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain, atrial fibrillation (an irregular, fast heartbeat), or tremors. It is also used after a heart attack to lower the risk of death or to prevent common migraine headaches. In addition, propranolol is used to improve symptoms associated with hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (a heart condition characterized by heart muscle thickening). It is also used with other medicines to control blood pressure and reduce symptoms associated with pheochromocytoma (tumor of the adrenal gland).

Do not stop taking propranolol without talking to your doctor. Stopping this medication suddenly can cause harmful effects. Your doctor should gradually reduce your dose when stopping treatment with this medication. Propranolol can worsen heart failure, cause breathing problems, or hide symptoms of low blood sugar levels if you have diabetes. Tell your doctor if you experience trouble breathing while you are taking propranolol. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar frequently, especially when you first start taking propranolol. Propranolol can cause serious allergic reactions. Tell your doctor if you develop any skin reactions.
