Tenoretic (Atenolol/Chlorthalidone)

Tenoretic is a combination medicine used to treat high blood pressure. Tenoretic contains two medicines: atenolol (a beta-blocker) and chlorthalidone (a diuretic [water pill]). Tenoretic is available as Tenoretic 50, which contains 50 milligrams (mg) of atenolol and 25 mg of chlorthalidone, and Tenoretic 100, which contains 100 mg of atenolol and 25 mg of chlorthalidone.

Do not stop taking Tenoretic without talking to your doctor. Stopping this medication suddenly can cause harmful effects. Your doctor should reduce your dose gradually when stopping treatment with this medication. Tenoretic can worsen heart failure, cause breathing problems, or hide symptoms of low blood sugar levels if you have diabetes. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar frequently, especially when you first start taking Tenoretic. Tenoretic can cause fluid and electrolyte imbalances. Signs and symptoms of this include dry mouth, thirst, weakness, fatigue, drowsiness, restlessness, muscle pains or cramps, low blood pressure, decreased urination, fast heart rate, nausea, and vomiting. Your doctor will need to monitor the levels of electrolytes in your blood periodically.
