Zantac (Ranitidine HCl)

Zantac is a medicine that reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. It is used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers (ulcer in the upper intestine), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and erosive esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus [tube that connects your mouth and stomach] due to excess acid). Zantac is also used to prevent a relapse of esophagitis or stomach or duodenal ulcers and for treatment of conditions where your stomach makes too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Zantac is available as tablets, syrup, or effervescent tablets called Zantac 25 EFFERdose.

Zantac can cause a sudden attack of porphyria (a blood disorder that interferes with how your body produces heme, which is the oxygen-carrying component of your red blood cells). Tell your doctor if you have ever had this condition. If you have a condition known as phenylketonuria (an inability to process phenylalanine, a protein in your body), be aware that Zantac 25 EFFERdose tablets contain phenylalanine.
